CARACAS — Venezuela’s National Assembly on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, approved a resolution honoring about 100 people killed during last weekend’s U.S. military attack.

Ruling-party lawmaker Blanca Eekhout introduced the measure.

She called the victims “patriots” and said the tribute was intended to preserve their memory.

The measure calls for a memorial at the site of the strike and creation of a commission to support victims’ families.

The vote followed an announcement by the Interior Ministry on Wednesday regarding the casualties.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the attack left 100 dead.

Cabello said President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, suffered injuries during the raid.

He paid tribute to President Maduro, his wife, and those who died in the operation on a state television program.

He condemned the U.S. military attack on the South American nation as barbaric and despicable.

He said it harmed many innocent people.

The minister described the attack as inhuman and said it was a truth that could not be concealed.

U.S. forces struck several locations across Venezuela on Saturday, including Caracas.

Authorities said the attack killed Venezuelan and Cuban military personnel stationed in the country.

Forces captured President Maduro and First Lady Flores during the operation and flew them to New York.

Lawmakers urged foreign governments and parliaments to reject the use of force.

They said the international community must defend international law and national sovereignty. / XINHUA
