Central Luzon’s first legislated Multi-Species Marine Hatchery was inaugurated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
Located in Barangay Quinawan in Bagac, Bataan province, the hatchery is the first of its kind in the region.
Its establishment is mandated under Republic Act 11912 or "An act establishing a multi-species marine hatchery in the municipality of Bagac, Province of Bataan, and appropriating funds therefor" enacted on July 30, 2022.
The P32-million facility aims to boost fish seed production, support aquaculture enterprises, and enhance marine resource sustainability in the province and its neighboring areas.
BFAR said the hatchery is powered by solar energy, operates efficiently and sustainably while minimizing environmental impact.
The project is expected provide stable supply of high-quality fingerlings for fisherfolk and hatchery operators.
The agency said it will oversee operations for two years in collaboration with the provincial and municipal agriculture offices.
BFAR said it will conduct intensive training for personnel and implement a transition plan for a smooth handover within the two year period.
After two years, the provincial government of Bataan will assume management through a memorandum of agreement.
Once fully operational, the hatchery will serve as a key hub for fish seed production, broodstock maintenance, and training programs for fisheries stakeholders, government personnel, and state universities and colleges.
