The field of Mass and Media Communication offers a wide array of career opportunities, reflecting the versatility and relevance of this discipline in the modern world. I was invited to be one of the speakers during the UAGS Career Forum held on February 11, 2025, and my presentation highlighted the diverse professional paths that graduates of this field like me can pursue. From traditional roles in journalism to emerging opportunities in digital media, I aimed to inspire students to explore careers aligned with their skills and passions.
One of the key takeaways from my presentation was the extensive list of career options available to Mass Communication graduates. These include roles such as news reporter, researcher, producer, and information officer, and newer positions like content creator and vlogger. This broad spectrum of possibilities illustrates how the media landscape continues to evolve, requiring adaptable and creative professionals. The inclusion of both on-air and behind-the-scenes roles ensures that individuals with varying interests and talents can find their niche.
As an alumna from UAGS Batch '96, I shared my journey through different media-related roles. My previous and current jobs—ranging from a mall PR officer to a college instructor and columnist—highlight the flexibility of a Mass Communication degree. My experiences underscored the idea that a single academic foundation can support multiple, interconnected career paths, allowing professionals to shift roles without having to start over from scratch.
Additionally, I emphasized the importance of passion in choosing a career. The quote by Confucius, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life," served as a motivational reminder to pursue meaningful work. In a field as dynamic as media and communication, genuine interest and enthusiasm can be the driving forces behind long-term success and job satisfaction.
In conclusion, my UAGS Career Forum presentation provided valuable insights into the many directions a Mass and Media Communication graduate can take. It celebrated both traditional media careers and modern digital opportunities, encouraging students to embrace change and follow their passions. With the right mindset and a love for storytelling, communication, and creativity, graduates are well-positioned to thrive in this exciting and ever-changing industry.
