The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported over the weekend that fire incidents in Central Luzon went down during the first quarter of this year compared to cases in 2024.
The bureau said that fire incidents in the region dropped to 170 cases this year from 224 during the same period in 2024.
Superintendent Maria Leiah Sajili, BFP Regional Public Information Unit Chief, said that despite the decline in fire incidents, the public should remain cautious.
She added that people should take measures, not only during fire prevention month in March, but throughout the year.
"Awareness and proactive measures remain key in preventing fire-related disasters. Preventing fires is a shared responsibility. By staying vigilant and practicing fire safety measures, we can protect lives and properties,” she said.
The BFP urged the public to check electrical connections regularly, avoid overloading sockets, and ensure that only high-quality electrical materials are used.
The regional fire office also asked the people to never leave an open flame unattended, and always have a fire extinguisher or a bucket of sand nearby in case of emergencies.
People should have a fire escape plan, install smoke detectors, and educate children about fire safety, the BFP said.
Sajili reminded the public to call 911 or their local fire station instead of relying on social media.
“Every second counts during a fire emergency. Instead of posting about it online, call the nearest fire station so we can respond immediately,” Sajili said.
