The local government unit of Angeles City has launched its Abacan River Clean-Up over the weekend.
Mayor Carmelo "Pogi" Lazatin, Jr. said the program was implemented in line with the preservation of the river.
The mayor said "the clean-up is vital for the river's health and improves the community's appeal and livability."
Jenifer S. Castro, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), said the LGU finds the clean-up necessary due to the growing garbage problem along the river in barangays Balibago, Malabanias, Ninoy Aquino, Pampang, Pandan, Pulung Maragul, and Sta. Teresita.
Various agencies took part in the clean-up, including river rangers from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), barangay officials and volunteers, street sweepers, and contingents from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
Castro said the clean-up is part of a long-term commitment to community engagement and water conservation.
She expressed gratitude to the barangay leaders who led their teams in the clean-up including Joseph "PG" Ponce (Balibago), Maria Corazon Alejandrino (Pandan), Luz Nava (Malabanias), Carlos Dela Cruz (Pampang), Joel Sanchez (Sta.Teresita).
Castro stressed that continuous community efforts will keep waterways safe and clean.
