IN LINE with the week-long celebration of the 174th town fiesta of Apalit, members of the 2018 Fiesta Executive Committee together with local government officials and employees on Tuesday morning, June 26, conducted a tree planting activity at the town’s Bamboo Hub.

Dubbed as “Plant a Tree-Mitigating Climate Change,” Mayor Peter Nucom and executive committee chairman Paul Nabong led the planting of bamboo in the vast open land located along the Pampanga River in Barangay Sulipan.

Nucom said that the activity aims to develop the area into a nest of bamboo, and eventually become a tourist destination and recreational area for residents.

While parts of the open area are already surrounded by full-grown bamboo, Nucom said that they aim to further thrive it with the continuous propagation and nurturing of the bamboo seedlings.

“We have been nurturing this bamboo hub for some time now because we could see the benefits for the people. It’s like an ecopark and a venue for different activities,” he said.

Aside from the tourism growth that it may bring, Nucom noted that bamboo plants may also help in mitigating environmental dilemmas such as soil erosion in the said portion of Pampanga River since bamboo is considered as good soil conservation plant.

“Our other goal in planting here is to help fight climate change because we owe a lot to our environment,” he said.
