BFAR-Central Luzon plants mangrove in Pampanga coast

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- To revive the shoreline in the province, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Central Luzon conducted mangrove planting along the Pampanga River recently.

Around 300 mangrove propagules were directly planted into the demarked shoreline of Barangay San Antonio in Sasmuan town also as part of the continuing celebration and paying tribute to local fisherfolk.

"This is also to highlight the importance of our coastal resources which mangroves play a huge role with," said BFAR-Central Luzon Director Wilfredo Cruz.

He added that the mangrove planting initiative supports the rehabilitation efforts that BFAR-Central Luzon, through its Coastal Resource Management has been conducting for the past years.

"We aim is to restore mangrove ecosystems and to encourage the next generation to take an active interest in their local mangrove forests," added Cruz.

Most of those who volunteered to join in the activity are crab catchers, as mangrove serve as homes to crabs.

"The more the mangroves planted, the more the crabs will come in. This will support the livelihood of crab catchers. In a few years' time, the same mangroves will mature and will help protect the community and farm lands from the effects of sea water intrusion," he added.
