CITY OF SAN FERNANDO --- Salt producers in Aurora and Zambales are now harnessing the power of the sun to boost their production.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Central Luzon said fishers' associations in Barangay Mijares in Dipaculao and in Dilasag, both in Aurora, and in Iba town in Zambales are now installing and testing the solar salt packages provided by the Department of Agriculture.
The solar salt package is a step in reducing reliance on traditional salt cooking methods and tapping into the full potential of renewable energy sources.
The technology is seen to help enhance the production capacity and ensure a more consistent supply even during the rainy season.
Solar salt technology harnesses the power of the sun in the evaporation process, resulting in higher yields of salt, particularly during the sun-drenched summer months.
The adoption of solar salt packages will result in a more sustainable and resilient salt production method. It will also address the low-quality control and stunted product improvement for many years that have contributed to the decline in the production of salt in the region.
Data from the DA shows that the country is currently importing 93 percent of its salt supply.
