ConCom spox wants charter change an issue in May polls

CLARK FREEPORT -- All candidates in the coming elections in May this year, whether local or national, should reveal their stand on the proposed change in the country's Constitution.

Ding Generoso, spokesperson for the Constitutional Commission headed bu former Supreme Court chief justice Reynato Puno, said the proposed charter change is so critical to the nation's future that the May poll candidates should tell the voters their views.

"In fact, I suggest a public debate among the candidates on this issue," Generoso said during a forum of the Capampangan in Media, Inc. (CAMI) here recently.

Generoso, at the same time, scored the proposed charter version of the House of Representatives as poor version of the Puno commission had submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte.

“It’s a horror version," Generoso jokingly said.

Generoso averred that the House version does not deal with genuine political and economic reforms the country needs, particularly on political dynasty.

"The House version even expands the realm for political dynasties," he said.

Generoso said the reforms proposed by the Puno commission include abolition of political dynasty and levelling up of financial conditions of other regions in the country through a shift to federalism.

"Federalism is the chance for poor regions perennially beset by financial issues to improve their situation," Generoso said.

Generoso said he has been travelling around the country to spread the good news about federalism because there are only few champions among the country's politicians about it.

"We need more credible spokespersons for the charter change that we seek and a public debate about it among candidates in the May elections may produce them," he said. (NCS)
