DA conducts bird flu virus surveillance in Pampanga

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO --- The staff of the Regulatory Division Animal Health Unit of the Department of Agriculture (DA) recently conducted a disease surveillance in the municipalities or cities previously affected by Avian Influenza Virus (Bird Flu).

The surveillance was conducted together with the Bureau of Animal Industry, Provincial Veterinary Offices, and Agriculture Veterinary Offices from respective cities.

This is done by collecting blood and "swab" samples from chickens, ducks, quail, geese, turkeys, pigeons, and other birds to be sent to the laboratory for testing to establish if they are positive of bird flu.

The team recently conducted a one-kilometer radius surveillance in Magalang, Arayat, City of San Fernando, Sto. Tomas, and Apalit, Pampanga.

This is expected to identify and monitor the spread of the virus in the community.

Through this, the spread of the disease in neighboring municipalities or cities may be prevented.

The team is also conducting a seven-kilometer radius surveillance to determine if a province can be declared as an “Avian Influenza-free Province”.
