DepEd expects more enrollees

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of Education (DepEd) said that more students in public and private schools are expected to enroll even as classes officially opened on Tuesday.

DepEd spokesperson Undersecretary Michael Poa said learners can still enroll on the first week of classes as some schools suspended classes due to heavy rains and flooding spawned by the southwest monsoon.

"Let’s observe until Monday next week what the figures will be. There are also suspended classes today due to Typhoon Goring and flooding," he said.

"Only Kinder, Grades 1, 4, 7 really have to register, that is why we have early registration for them. Other grade levels are pre-registered. The enrollment is really just a confirmation of their registered status. So usually, they do it on the first day," Poa added.

The DepEd's Learner Information System showed that as of morning of August 29, a total of 22,917,725, enrollees have been recorded in public and private schools, including state and local universities and colleges.

Bulk of this number of students were noted in Region 4-A (3,488,180); Central Luzon Region (2,626,684); and National Capital Region (2,497,178).

The least number of enrolments was recorded in the Cordillera Administrative Region with 355,728; followed by Caraga Region with 650,421; and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with 699,007.

Last school year 2022-2023, the DepEd recorded 28,035,042 enrolments nationwide.
