Environmental workers rescue python in Lubao town

LUBAO -- Agents of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), have rescued a Philippine python from a barangay here recently.

This came as a concerned netizen from Barangay Sta. Cruz here requested assistance on how to deal with the snake that he has found near his home.

Nikko Sembrano contacted DENR Pampanga that a seven to eight foot long reticulated python was found lurking near their house.

The snake, locally called “bitin” was then turned over at the barangay hall and was later rescued by the DENR PENRO Pampanga as instructed by OIC-PENRO Laudemir Salac.

The reptile was then turned over to the Pampanga State Agricultural University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

DENR PENRO Information Officer Don Reich de Dios said that wild animals found in communities should not be harmed. He added that the rapid expansion of settlements have contributed to the loss of habitat of certain animals.

“We encourage people to report such instances to the DENR,” de Dios said, adding that wild animals like snakes and birds that end up in urban communities should not be captured for food or turned into pets.

De Dios said that these should be properly turned over and returned to their natural habitat far from urban communities.
