Kapampangan fishers get livelihood assistance

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO Fishermen from Apalit, Mexico, Minalin, Porac, and Sasmuan towns recently received assistance from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

The aid goes in the form of equipment and gear to help the fishermen enhance fishpond operations.

BFAR Region 3 Director Wilfredo Cruz said the bureau is responding to requests from the local government units where the fisher-beneficiaries come from.

"Upon receipt of their requests, we tapped the office of Pampanga Provincial Fisheries Officer Nico Wamil to allocate the distributed items in line with BFAR's goal of paying tribute to the fisherfolk by helping them increase their catches and income,” he said.

The donations include multifilament nets and solar lamps to make operation more efficient in their fish ponds, gillnets and floaters especially designed to catch crabs in rivers.

Ambulant vendors who sell their harvest received tri-wheel bikes with attached weighing scales and coolers to help facilitate in trading their produce.

Cruz appealed to the beneficiaries to give value and proper care to the equipment given to them by the government so that they can use them for a long time.
