CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Fisherfolk from Nueva Ecija province who were affected by Super Typhoon Karding (Typhoon Noru) in September last year on Tuesday received some 100,000 catfish (hito) fingerlings from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Central Luzon.
The fingerlings were distributed to fish growers in Gapan City, Nueva Ecija province to help them recover from the devastation, start anew their livelihood activities, and boost the region's aquaculture sector.
The BFAR also distributed some 20,000 freshwater prawn (ulang) postlarvae to fishermen in the municipality of Talavera as part of recovery efforts.
In an interview, BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said that Nueva Ecija was among the provinces placed under a state of calamity following the massive damage caused by the super typhoon in the aquaculture sector.
"The move is part of the survival and recovery assistance program of the agency for fisherfolks and farmers alike whose livelihoods were adversely affected by the super typhoon," he said.
