The three vestments worn by Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines from January 15 to 19, 2015 were made by seamstresses in Bulacan province.
The vestments, locally called "abito" are among liturgical garments worn by the Catholic clergy, their assistants, and choristers during masses and other official Church functions.
The robes were worn by the Pope during masses at the Manila Cathedral, Tacloban Airport in Leyte and at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta, Manila.
The vestments were fashioned by seamstresses of Disenio Sagrado, a garment factory based in Guiguinto, Bulacan, which was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church in the Philippines for the said Papal Visit.
Ronald Allan Babaran, then 33 years old and one of the owners of the tailor shop, said the robe worn by Pope Francis during his mass at the Manila Cathedral on January 16, 2015, was designed with embroidered Sampaguita flowers.
The embroidery looked like a necklace around the neck, accentuating the simple robe that reflected the personality of Pope Francis.
The fragrant Sampaguita flower symbolizes the Filipinos' warm and welcoming nature.
The design is almost identical to the vestment worn during the pope's mass at Tacloban Airport on January 17, 2015, except that the Sampaguita flower embroidery is from the top to bottom. It was not very visible when the pope wore it because he was wearing a yellow raincoat, as his visit in Leyte was in the midst of rains due to Typhoon Amang.
The Pope, endearingly called "Lolo Kiko" by Filipino Catholics, visited Tacloban City to "shares in the sufferings of the people" after Typhoon Yolanda devastated the Visayas, particularly Leyte and Samar on November 8, 2013.
For mass at the Quirino Grandstand on January 18, 2015, the robe worn by Pope Francis featured the embroidered image of the Sto. Nino, made to coincide with the feast of the saint. It is accompanied by embroidered designs of Kawayan and Anahaw, the national leaves of the Philippines.
Bamboo is a picture of the resilience of the Filipino people, able to withstand even the strongest winds or storms without breaking.
Pope Francis was laid to rest on Saturday at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, marking the first of nine days of official Vatican mourning.
After this, the conclave of cardinals to elect a new pope will follow.
