LTO: License plates backlog resolved

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said it finally wiped out the license plate backlog which hounded the government for a decade.

The agency disclosed that it ramped up plate production in the past two years.

As of June 30 this year, the LTO claimed that it produced 18,578,612 plates which "effectively solved' the problem.

“We are elated and excited to announce that your LTO was able to comply with the commitment to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. that there will be no backlog for both motorcycle and four-wheel vehicles' plates by June 2025,” said acting LTO Chief Greg G. Pua.

“To borrow a quote from our LTO Chief, Asec Mendoza: ‘Sa Bagong Pilipinas, lahat may plaka na’,” he added.

Pua said Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza made the commitment to President Marcos during a meeting last year at the Malacañang Palace to address the license plate backlog.

With the president's support, Mendoza said the license plate backlog will be wiped out by June 2025.

“On the last day of June 2025, we were able to comply with our commitment by producing a total of 18,578,612 that includes both backlogs and current plate requirements,” said Pua.

The figure covers 11,815,068 motorcycle plates and 6,763,544 or 3,381,772 pairs motor vehicle plates.

“This significant accomplishment, which surpassed the expectations of everybody, is a team effort, with the dedication and perseverance of our Plate Making Plant,” said Pua.

The LTO said the license plate backlog started in 2014, and worsened by a number of factors that resulted in the accumulation of millions of plates for both motorcycles and four-wheel cars.

To address the issue completely, Pua said they are now embarking on the delivery of the license plates to motorists affected by the backlog.

“And with this task finally completed, we assure our millions of clients that we will also fast-track the process of delivery and will continue to find ways to do so,” he added.

As of the latest data, more than 7 million plates were already distributed to the owners.
