Guagua town’s tradition of woodcarving will be showcased at the Sacred Arts of Betis Exhibit set at the Blessed Souls Chapel of the historic Manila Cathedral from March 24 to April 8, 2025.

The event was organized by the Betis Dukit Heritage Foundation, Inc. in partnership with Manduquit Anluagi ning Santa Ursula (MASU).

Supported by Cardinal Pablo David, the exhibit offers a wider view of the sacred and ecclesiastical woodcarving legacy of Betis.

Betis District is known for its wood carving industry, which has evolved from furniture to religious and installation art.

“This is more than just an exhibition—it is a spiritual and cultural experience, a testament to the enduring devotion and craftsmanship of Betis,” said Presidential Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art Willy Layug.

The exhibit will feature artworks from MASU members and other Betis artisans.

A highlight of the exhibit is its connection to the Dukit Festival, an annual celebration of Betis woodcarving heritage established in 2012.

The festival showcases actual carving competitions and the current status of wood carving industry in Guagua, which has been facing numerous challenges in recent years.

Beyond its artistic and cultural significance, the Sacred Arts of Betis exhibit also serves as a fundraising initiative to support woodcarvers and the Dukit Festival.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the artisans, benefactors, and supporters who have made this exhibit possible,” the organizers expressed. “Special thanks to the Manila Cathedral for allowing us to celebrate both heritage and devotion in this sacred space.”

The event is expected to draw art enthusiasts, historians, and devotees.
