De Leon: Homeless man hands out resume on the street

NOPE! Not on “Jobstreet,” but elsewhere.

A Texas A&M graduate was reportedly said to have moved to Silicon Valley in September of last year with the dream of getting a job in the tech industry.

After nearly a year of striking out on opportunities, David Casarez, who was living in his van, made a very bizarre move: he stood on a corner with copies of his resume to give to passing motorists.

He did this while holding a sign that read “Homeless, Hungry 4 Success. Take a Resume.”

Incidentally, a netizen took a snap of Casarez and his sign as well as his resume and tweeted it, a tweet that has since been retweeted more than 137,000 times and has led to an insane amount of interest from potential employers.

He then went viral and has received more than 200 job offers so far as people have reached out to human resources departments at tech companies, including giants Google, Tesla and Facebook.

Now before we even start saying that this is just another social media blah-blah, Casarez does say that he’s “homeless by choice,” in that he’s living in a van to cut costs rather than out of necessity.

Indeed, to get where we want to go, we have to make sacrifices by choice.

And consequently, there’s truth behind our famous local meme, “minsan advance dapat mag-isip!”
