International

THE past days were spent on a personal business in Leyte, and that meant going around and testing their food places as well.

Yes, Samar and Leyte, or the small part I’ve seen at least – Tacloban, Tanauan, Basey, and Palo – still have swathes of devastation, but the people are picking up the pieces and starting anew. What stand out, however, are the throngs of foreigners of all colors and sizes.

Consequently, the food choices are great.

Our first dinner was right beside our hotel (Hotel Lorenza), which was full of international workers from a group named Samaritan’s Purse. The restaurant name: Guiseppe’s. Yes. Italian.

So, we ordered prawn pasta, pizza, and a steak that came covered in cream sauce.

Jane added tenderloin steak, and we got another pizza – vegetarian, this time, for Kublai.

We topped that with a Cabernet.

The food is good as we were told. It’s owned and run by an Italian married to a Filipina, we were told, and we were the only group in the jampacked restaurant that was made up of Filipino-looking Filipinos. I describe us as such because on the other table was a family of Filipino-Chinese, while all other tables were occupied by Caucasians.

The big crowd inside was proof enough of its good food. Its pizzas were hand-tossed, they wasn’t even any effort to make the final pieces round. But the toppings were generous and spread out well; the only complaint you’ll get from yourcompanion is if you hand him over a piece that is on the small side of the pizza.

I should know, I earned that look from Kublai as I handed him a piece of the vegetarian pie.

Guiseppe’s is in downtown Tacloban, along AvenidaVeteranos Extension, and is known by a lot of people such that it’s easy to ask for directions.

The poblacion itself is not that big, you will not get lost in it. But like many Visayan towns and cities, the roads are quite narrow.

Thus, if by chance you happen to drop by Tacloban, Guiseppe’s is a place you must try.

After that… stroll around Burgos Street where more smaller, quaint, but equally good eating and drinking places are.
