THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Eastern Visayas has launched an orientation on basic consumer rights and responsibilities as part of its World Consumer Rights Day advocacy.
Consumer Protection Division Chief Eleanor Etulle assured the public that the agency, under Regional Director Celerina Bato, “is ready to answer questions about the rights and responsibilities of consumers.”
On March 14, 2025, DTI-Eastern Visayas held an orientation at Barangay Sirin, Tacloban City, which was attended by 23 participants, including Sangguniang Barangay members, SK Federation members, and barangay nutrition scholars, among others.
DTI also lauded the attendees for raising concerns about product replacement, warranties, expiration dates, business name registration, and other consumer rights issues.
"We are very grateful that the DTI came to carry out this advocacy in our barangay," said Barangay Councilor Abundio Serrano during the event.
Meanwhile, DTI-Eastern Visayas personnel donated pre-loved clothing to families affected by the recent fire incident in the barangay.
“The gesture aligns with the World Consumer Rights Day initiative of the Department, which revolves around the theme, ‘A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles.’ The theme extends to promote sustainable shopping practices, such as buying and selling thrift or pre-loved items,” the agency said in a statement.
According to DTI, patronizing pre-loved or thrift items “promotes sustainability by extending the lifespan of clothing and other goods, reducing waste, and minimizing the environmental impact of resource extraction and manufacturing, offering a viable alternative to fast fashion.” (Ronald Reyes/SunStar Philippines)
