POLICE in Eastern Visayas have lauded the leadership of newly appointed Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Nicolas Torre III, citing his “wealth of experience and dedication to public service” in leading the country’s 280,000-strong police force.
“As the Police Regional Office 8 joins the rest of the country in ushering in this new chapter, the men and women of Eastern Visayas reaffirm their commitment to uphold the values of integrity, service, and accountability—values that Police General Torre himself has exemplified throughout his distinguished career,” said Brigadier General Jay Cumigad, regional director.
Torre took his oath as the 31st PNP chief on June 2, 2025, following the mandatory retirement of General Rommel Francisco Marbil.
Torre’s appointment marks a historic milestone in the police service, as he becomes the first alumnus of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) under the “Tagapagpatupad” Class of 1993 to hold the top PNP post.
Born in Jolo, Sulu, Torre completed his elementary and high school education in Koronadal, South Cotabato, Mindanao.
He holds three master’s degrees: Public Administration (Philippine Christian University), Business Administration (International Academy of Management and Economics), and Educational Management (Samar College).
“General Torre’s academic credentials complement his operational and strategic expertise. His leadership of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and his resolution of high-profile cases have further cemented his reputation as a results-driven officer with an eye for justice,” added Cumigad in a media statement.
Before leading the CIDG, Torre held key positions throughout his career, including serving as provincial director of the Samar Police Provincial Office (SPPO) from April 2017 to January 2019.
“He has a deep understanding of the unique challenges in Eastern Visayas—a tenure that earned him the respect and admiration of PRO 8 personnel,” Cumigad added.
In his inaugural address, attended by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and other Cabinet officials, Torre vowed “to serve and protect the Filipino people with integrity, courage, and compassion.”
“To the Filipino people—the very reason for our existence—we shall work harder to ensure that our communities are safe, your rights are respected, and your trust is earned,” the PNP chief added. (Ronald Reyes/SunStar Philippines)
