CSWD calls on protection for 9-year-old child who torches vehicle in Tacloban

THE Tacloban City Social Welfare Office (CSWD) has called on the residents to protect the rights of a nine-year-old child who torched an impounded vehicle at the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) compound in the city.

“For the general public, we request for sobriety. While we understand your issues and concerns, let us not forget that we are dealing with a minor,” the CSWD said.

“Posting a video where his physical identity is revealed is strictly prohibited and punishable by law. We hope that we are clear on this matter,” it added.

On September 23, 2023, the videos and photographs of the child with his uncovered face were circulated on social media following the incident.

The boy allegedly set the car on fire after he failed to get his coin that was stuck in the vehicle.

In a statement, the CSWD said they already placed the child in a city government-ran residential facility for rehabilitation.

“His rights should be protected. How others would see his deed as deviant, unjust, he is still a child. We, at CSWDO, commit to helping him to become a better person and make a difference in his life…The best interest of the child is always of paramount importance,” said CSWD.

The city government also appealed for “understanding and compassion” for the boy’s action.

Authorities said no one was injured during the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
