Man attempts to kill self over 'tokhang'

A 46-YEAR-OLD vendor attempted to kill himself after feeling "anxious" about being included in the alleged "tokhang," the police's anti-drug campaign.

The man was seen with a self-inflicted wound along the national road of Barangay Lib-og, in Maasin City, Southern Leyte on Friday afternoon, August 19, 2023.

The man is a resident of Purok 4, Kalikid Sur, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, according to the authorities.

The responding police personnel from Maasin City Police Station found the vendor already on the ground with open wounds on both wrists.

Witnesses said they saw the victim walking on the road and suddenly shouting in the vernacular, "gikapoy na ako (I'm already tired)," and slashing his wrists using a broken glass bottle.

Initial investigation revealed that the victim was afraid that he was included in the "tokhang," prompting him to commit suicide.

The victim was immediately taken by the responding Bureau of Fire Protection Rescue personnel to a hospital for immediate medical attention.

Maasin City Police Station also coordinated with City Social Welfare and Development and the Cabanatuan City Police Station "to inform the immediate family members" of the vendor. (SunStar Philippines)
