Man shot dead after assaulting cop in Baybay City

A 31-YEAR-OLD gym instructor was shot dead after he allegedly assaulted a police officer in Baybay City, Leyte Friday evening, June 5.

The fatality was identified as Samuel “Dodong” Managbanag, married and resident of Sto. Niño Village, Zone-1, Baybay City.

Corporal Ronel Tapales, who shot Managbanag, voluntarily deposited his issued short firearm after the incident around 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Initial investigation disclosed that Tapales chanced upon a group of persons drinking on the side of the street. He then cautioned them about their activity, given that the Executive Order 58 of the city prohibited any person from drinking outside their residence.

Managbanag, however, challenged the 32-year-old policeman to have a fist fight, according to the report.

After the officer refused to fight, Managbanag allegedly attacked him.

Tapales ran away but he was cornered at the bamboo fence nearby, the report added.

Managbanag then tried to grab the officer’s firearm, prompting the policeman to shoot him once, hitting his body.

Managbanag was brought to Western Leyte Provincial Hospital for medical attention but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Recovered from the scene was one empty shell of caliber .9mm.

Police are investigating the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
