Rebel killed in clash with soldiers in Eastern Samar

AN alleged member of the New People’s Army was killed in an encounter with soldiers in Borongan City Sunday, July 11, 2021.

Troops from the Philippine Army’s 78 Infantry Battalion with K9 team were conducting combat operations at the vicinity of Barangay San Andres, Borongan when they encountered about 15 alleged rebels around 11:05 a.m. Sunday.

The firefight lasted for around 20 minutes.

According to the army, the rebels retreated toward the north direction, leaving behind one dead comrade.

They also recovered an M16 rifle, a magazine of 5.56mm long, backpack, jungle bolo, and other personal items.

Authorities have yet to identify the fatality.

On July 7, 2021, three government troopers were also killed while six others were injured after they were ambushed by alleged rebels near their detachment in Barangay 4, Jipapad, Eastern Samar. (SunStar Philippines)
