Food

Here are some more food places that you may try, if you trust me.

Dulce Vida. Sister restaurant of Tiny Kitchen. The difference is Dulce serves Latin inspired food and I have to say, really good food at that. So far we have tried their chicken and beef meal sets and we will be going back for more, that is a promise. Chona and I are so happy that we have a place to go in Matina. When I go back I will be trying their ham and cheese sandwich as I am a sucker for sandwiches. I can hardly wait. Try Dulce, you will not regret it. They are located just outside SM Ecoland. Along the road that leads to Times Beach. If you know where Times Beach is.

Marina Tuna. At our age we are trying to avoid meat. Well, trying is the word because at least for me, I can hardly resist it. Luckily we have a secret weapon. Marina Tuna. In case you still do not know, they have this great and wonderful and yummy tune eye soup. Just writing about it makes me salivate. Then add the swordfish plus their chop suey and you will be more than satisfied. Their servings are huge. And to top everything, the food is healthy so you really cannot go wrong. Suki na kami sa Marina Tuna. Our favorite branch is the one in Matina, near 911.

Baked by Joyce. First off, Joyce is my niece. But that does not mean anything because she bakes the most delicious brownies I have ever tasted. No kidding there. I almost consumed a whole tray in one sitting and I really had to restrain myself, it is that good. They are chewy, not too sweet and downright crunchy. Honestly I do not know how she does it but you just have to try yourself. Trust me in this.

And yes, her apple pie is yumyum. She bakes a variety of cakes, cupcakes and pastries that would make you really ask for more. You can contact her thru her Facebook page, Baked by Joyce. Trust me in this.

Empanada. Nope that is not the name of a store but the thing itself. One of our clients owns a hospital in Toril and whenever we go there, we have to taste the empanada of this guy who stands outside the hospital and serves hot empanada. They are good that sometimes I eat three or four in one sitting and I can afford to do so because they sell for three for 20 pesos. But hold your horses, do not be deceived by the price, the empanadas are crunchy, tasty and they leave this wonderful after taste.

Too bad I cannot give his name right now because I keep forgetting. Next time.

Habi at Kape. I have several reason reasons why I like eating there. But let me share the top three. First their luglug is so good that it is a standalone treat. No need for calamansi and patis. It is cooked so well that it can well stand on its own. The other is their ensaymada smothered with cheese. Haay. And of course the lemongrass juice. On weekends they have a buffet and you get the chance to savor the other delicacies. But me? It is the luglug, the ensaymada and the lemon grass juice that make me go back. Again and again.

Winward. A Japanese restaurant beside Men Seng. This was actually a pleasant surprise. Have always liked Japanese food so when we discovered the place we tried it and the food was a surprise. The waiter who served us looked familiar and after a short conversation he told us he was the waiter in a different Japanese restaurant and there I placed him. We had gyodon and miso ramen and those were good eats. If you want an inexpensive and quick and satisfying Japanese meal, try Winward.

Grub. Cute cozy restaurant along Duterte Street. Owned by two fellow Toastmasters who have a passion for food and it shows. ( sorry ladies!) Kidding aside there is a lot there to take in and you really have to go there and try their menu. Their green salad is a must though. Their dino chops is a best seller and I can attest to that. I also like their puttanesca. But you have got to try their Homerun cake. It is rich, it is filling and it is a homerun.

That’s it for now. Time to explore other food surprises in the city of Davao. And oh yes, buy all the fruits you can now as they are still there. Durian, lanzones and mangosteen. A doctor friend said that you should eat that is in season. So hala, sige let us all eat.
