Justice

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” (Psalm 89:14)

Perhaps one of the most difficult and challenging things to do in life is to keep quiet when one knows that he or she is in the right position to avenge an injustice done to him or her.

Human nature automatically suggests that one should stand and defend himself or herself in difficult situations. Man’s survival instinct naturally acts to eliminate any perceived threat. However, the Word says, “Do not take revenge, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.”

Justice may be achieved in different ways depending on the perspective of the person searching for it. Many believe that justice is achieved if a criminal is sent to prison, a sinner is penalized for his sins or a violator is made to pay for transgressing the law.

Others believe that life has its own way of giving a person his or her due. Still, many decide that true justice is in the hands of God. However, regardless of one’s perception of how justice is attained, it is important to know how to respond well to injustice experienced in daily lives.

This is because one’s response determines how he or she will dispense justice if he or she has the power to do so.

The natural tendency of man in times of crisis can be summed up in two words: fight or flight. If he or she does not stand on his ground, he runs for his life or vice versa.

Naturally, man responds for survival; thus, it is but natural for one to defend his or her stance or position. Regardless of his or her choice whether to fight or flight, his or her goal is the same: self-preservation. However, a few master the art of incorruptibility.

These people do not necessarily fight or flight seemingly unfair circumstances, but they come out of the process unscathed. They manage to remain uncontaminated in the midst of corruption and remain whole even after going through unfair processes. In the midst of wickedness, their absolutes remain intact.

History shows that the Philippine nation has been exposed to many forms of injustice from the selection of its leaders to how well these leaders run the affairs of the nation and treat other leaders as well. Everyday, the Filipino people see different faces of injustice manifesting in the society and how well victims of unjust treatments responded. Some came out unscathed while some broken.

Recent events prove that injustices in the leadership should be corrected; otherwise, these examples shown to the public may pass on to the next generation of Filipinos. If that happens, should we be glad of the kind of legacy we are passing to our descendants? Is this the Philippines that we want our kids to inherit?

Justice should be dispensed in the nation or we will be judged. God cannot deny Himself and nature.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundations of his throne!”
