TWO clans in Basilan province have ended their nearly decade-old rido (clan feud) with the intercession of the 101st Infantry Brigade (101Bde), the military said Monday, June 16, 2025.

Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, 101Bde commander, said the reconciliation between the families of former Tuburan Mayor Durie Kallahal and Abdulla Jhovel took place at the 18th Infantry Battalion (18IB) headquarters in Campo Uno village, Lamitan City, on Sunday, June 15.

Luzon said the reconciliation was marked by the signing of a peace agreement and covenant, culminating in a symbolic handshake between the two families and signifying a new chapter of unity and mutual understanding.

Both families voluntarily surrendered a total of eight firearms—comprising of four M16 rifles and four Garand rifles—during the formal ceremony demonstrating sincerity and commitment to peace.

The milestone was achieved through the concerted efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Mark Serapion Lagud, Jr., 18IB and incumbent Tuburan Mayor Jhaber Kallahal.

Luzon said their sustained engagement and grassroots peace-building initiatives were instrumental in ending the feud, which originated in 2016 and had long disrupted social cohesion and community life in Tuburan.

“The reconciliation proves that even the deepest divisions can be bridged through dialogue and mutual respect. This is more than the end of a conflict—it is a beacon of hope for other communities facing similar struggles,” Luzon said.

Also present during the reconciliation activity were Colonel Frederick Sales, 101Be deputy commander; Lieutenant Colonel Adolf Ian Garceron, 4th Special Forces Battalion commander; and Lieutenant Colonel Roldan Mira, 6th Special Forces Battalion commander. (SunStar Zamboanga)
