THREE soldiers were wounded in a grenade attack at a military camp in Lamitan City, Basilan province, late Wednesday, August 6.

Two men riding tandem on a motorcycle tossed a grenade around 7:35 p.m. at the headquarters of the 18th Infantry Battalion (18IB) in Barangay Campo Uno, Lamitan City.

The victims include two soldiers with the rank of Private and one with the rank of Corporal—all personnel of the 18IB.

They were rushed to a hospital in Lamitan City as an investigation is ongoing to identify the suspects behind the attack.

Meanwhile, the 101st Infantry Brigade (101Bde) strongly condemned the treacherous assault by unidentified armed men at the 18IB headquarters.

“This cowardly, deliberate act of aggression against our troops is a clear affront to the stability and peace we have collectively worked hard to achieve in Basilan,” the 101Bde said in a statement on Thursday, August 7.

“Such violence threatens the hard-won peace and progress we have made, and the perpetrators of this attack will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable,” it added.

The 101Bde has tightened security measures and launched intelligence operations, with troops remaining on full alert.

“This attack, though alarming, only strengthens our resolve and determination to protect the gains of peace and development in Basilan,” the 101Bde said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
