SOLDIERS demonstrating their readiness to respond to emergencies have successfully rescued a fisherman in distress at sea in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the military said Friday, April 11, 2025.
The rescued fisherman was identified as Nadzer Saripada Salem, 33, a resident of Purok 4, Poblacion village, Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur.
Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Vargas Jr., 53rd Infantry Battalion (53IB) commander, said Salem was rescued on Thursday, April 10, in the sea waters of Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur.
Vargas said the troops of the 53IB's Delta Company were conducting a routine seaborne patrol in the coastal waters between Dimataling and Tabina towns when they discovered an overturned pump boat drifting near Tabina Bay.
Vargas said the troops upon closer inspection found Salem struggling in the water, clinging to the partially submerged motorboat.
Salem told the troops that his motorboat had sustained a hull puncture, causing it to take on water and eventually capsize while he was fishing.
"Reacting with urgency and professionalism, the soldiers swiftly carry out the rescue operation, safely retrieving Salem from the water and providing immediate assistance," Vargas said.
Vargas said the troops brought home Salem and returned to their headquarters.
He lauded the troops for their vigilance and dedication: "The safety and welfare of our citizens remain our top priority. I commend our troops for their prompt action and courage."
"Their service reflects the true spirit of the 53IB, to serve, protect, and stand ready to respond in times of need," he added.
He said the successful rescue underscored the vital roles of the Armed Forces in security operations and immediate humanitarian assistance, especially in remote and coastal communities. (SunStar Zamboanga)
