THE 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, with the support of concerned stakeholders, has resolved a nearly two-decade-long dispute between two families in the province of Lanao del Norte, the military announced on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
The 1st Infantry Division (1ID) stated that the long-standing conflict between the Bayao and Managsa families was settled with the signing of a peace covenant on Saturday, March 22, at Kutitap Beach Resort in Labu-ay village, Maigo, Lanao del Norte, through the efforts of the Philippine Army.
Key figures present at the settlement included Lieutenant Colonel Neil Piad, 5MIB commander; Police Captain Rodilio Diez, Maigo police chief; and local government officials led by Municipal Mayor Rafael Rizalda and Vice Mayor Lanto Muta.
The 1ID explained that the conflict dates back to a theft incident in Pendolonan village, Munai, in 2005, which escalated into violence, resulting in the death of Masigal Managsa and the subsequent displacement of the Bayao family to Tangcal, Lanao del Norte.
“Previous attempts at reconciliation, including one in 2017, failed to achieve a lasting resolution,” the 1ID said in a statement.
However, the 1ID added that renewed efforts led by local officials and military forces created a more conducive environment for peace.
Both families have agreed to set aside their differences and work toward lasting peace and unity in the province through sustained dialogue and mediation facilitated by the Philippine Army and local leaders.
“This landmark agreement underscores the Philippine Army’s unwavering commitment to promoting peace and stability in conflict-affected areas,” the 1ID stated.
The 1ID further emphasized that the successful resolution of the conflict highlights the power of dialogue, cooperation, and strategic engagement in securing long-term harmony in Lanao del Norte. (SunStar Zamboanga)
