Asian water monitor lizard freed in Zamboanga del Sur

PERSONNEL of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has released back to its natural habitat an Asian Water Monitor Lizard in Zamboanga del Sur.

The DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said Monday, May 19, the Asian Water Monitor Lizard, locally known as Bayawak, was released last week in Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

The monitor lizard was turned over to the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office by Patrolman Alexander Gello of the Zamboanga del Sur Maritime Police Station.

Gello said the wildlife species was discovered during the regular patrol of the Maritime Police in Sitio Anonang, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur. 

The DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said that trained wildlife enforcement staff conducted a thorough examination and confirmed that the reptile was in very good health. 

“Following proper protocol, the Bayawak was released back into a suitable natural habitat,” the DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said in a statement. 

The turnover and release reaffirm DENR’s commitment to the protection and conservation of the native wildlife. (SunStar Zamboanga)
