THE Ministry of the Interior and Local Government-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MILG-Barmm) has awarded single-detached housing units to 38 former Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members in Basilan, marking a significant step toward sustainable peace and reintegration.

The housing units were distributed on Wednesday, May 28, in Tumahubong village, Sumisip, Basilan under Project Tulong ng Gobyerno sa Nagmamalasakit (Tugon), Barmm's flagship initiative, to support former combatants on their path to peaceful and productive lives.

The MILG-Barmm said Thursday, May 29, that beyond serving as physical shelters, these homes represent new beginnings, stability, and hope for individuals who have chosen peace over conflict.

Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, 101st Infantry Brigade commander, emphasized the significance of the distribution of housing units to former ASG members.

“These homes are more than structures; they are the foundation of renewed lives and stronger communities,” Luzon said in a statement Thursday.

“By addressing the socio-economic roots of conflict and offering tangible opportunities, Project Tugon empowers former combatants to become productive, peace-promoting members of society,” he added.

The MILF-Barmm said that project Tugon is implemented in close collaboration with local government units, security forces, and civil society organizations.

The project embodies a holistic and inclusive approach to peace-building in Barmm.

Meanwhile, an additional 45 former ASG members were profiled on Wednesday at the Basilan Government Complex in Sta. Clara village, Lamitan City, Basilan for inclusion in the next phase of Project Tugon.

They have also received immediate cash assistance, rice, and grocery packages — part of Barmm's ongoing support for reintegration and socio-economic recovery. (SunStar Zamboanga)
