IN A significant development in the fight against terrorism, the 53rd Infantry Battalion (53IB) successfully facilitated the legal proceedings that led to the conviction of Elvie Docto, a ranking leader of the New People's Army (NPA) in Zamboanga Peninsula.
The 53IB said Friday, June 27, 2025, that the court found Docto guilty beyond reasonable doubt of violating Section 4(a) of Republic Act 11479, also known as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.
"She has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the benefit of parole," the 53IB said in a statement, without saying when the verdict was handed down.
The 53IB said that Docto, who is also known as Ka Nanang, is the political guide of Guerrilla Front Kara and a member of Kalihiman of the NPA's Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.
Docto was captured following a clash in April 2021 in Guinlin village, Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur. Two of her comrades were killed during the firefight.
The 53IB said the conviction emphasized the relentless pursuit of justice and highlighted the active role of the battalion in counter-terrorism efforts.
The 53IB said the battalion has contributed not only through combat operations but also by supporting law enforcement and judicial processes.
It said the battalion's close coordination with intelligence agencies, local authorities, and the judiciary was vital in building a strong case against the accused, leading to a landmark decision in the regional campaign against terrorism.
"The successful prosecution of Ms. Docto serves as a foundation for the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting communities from individuals and groups that seek to disrupt peace and national security," the 53IB said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
