THE 33.05-kilometer Curuan-Sibuco Road project is now over 96 percent complete, with full completion expected by September 2025, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced.
DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain, who oversees the department’s flagship infrastructure projects, stated that the P2.088-billion Curuan–Sibuco Road project receives funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB)-assisted Improving Growth Corridors in Mindanao Road Sector Project.
“The Curuan–Sibuco Road enhances connectivity, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services. This infrastructure is transformative for economic, social, and peace-building efforts in the region,” Sadain said.
Once completed, the road will significantly reduce travel time from four to five hours to just one and a half to two hours. It will also lower fuel and vehicle maintenance costs and facilitate faster, more affordable transport of agricultural products such as coconut, rubber, corn, fruits, and seafood. This improved access will lead to better market access and higher incomes for farmers in rural communities.
The project also holds significant implications for peace and security. Previously isolated areas will become accessible, allowing for better delivery of government services and faster emergency and law enforcement response times.
Sadain added that the construction phase has already created jobs for locals. Once finished, the road project is expected to attract investments in logistics, agri-trade, and tourism, unlocking the economic potential of the Zamboanga Peninsula and promoting balanced growth across Mindanao.
On Friday, July 4, 2025, DPWH officials, led by Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan, visited the site and received an update from Sadain during a comprehensive inspection of the ongoing road works connecting Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Norte. Officials from the construction firm undertaking the project joined Bonoan during the visit.
The project's implementation aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s "Bagong Pilipinas" vision for inclusive development, resilience, and sustained infrastructure growth. (SunStar Zamboanga)
