THE P450 million Sta. Cruz Flyover, the first in Zamboanga Peninsula, officially opened to motorists in the afternoon of Thursday, May 22, 2025, marking a major milestone in the efforts to ease traffic congestion in one of its busiest intersections in Zamboanga City.

Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan declared the Sta. Cruz Flyover open to motorists following an inspection and assessment of the project onsite, ensuring its operational readiness.

Bonoan emphasized the importance of the flyover project in improving traffic flow and road safety.

The funding for the project, initiated by then 1st District Representative Celso Lobregat, was taken from the 2022 and 2018 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

The flyover spans a total of 437.70 meters with a net length of approaches measuring 189.08 meters, and a bridge length of 248.62 meters.

The structure also spans 17.50 meters in width and accommodates four lanes for smoother traffic flow.

The flyover provides a direct route for vehicles traveling toward the Zamboanga International Airport coming from the eastern part of the city and vice-versa.

Local authorities have implemented several safety measures to ensure smooth transition under the new traffic scheme.

These include restrictions on specific vehicle types, designated pedestrian walkways, clear traffic signage and the deployment of traffic personnel.

The construction of the Sta. Cruz Flyover was undertaken by DPWH-Zamboanga Peninsula through Frey-Fil Corporation.

Supposedly, two flyover projects are to be constructed in Zamboanga City initiated by Lobregat in 2017.

The other one is from the junction of Taupan Road in Barangay San Jose Gusu to Barangay Upper Calarian along the Zamboanga City-Labuan-Limpapa in the west coast.

However, the funds for the construction of the flyover in the west coast was reverted back to the national coffers due to delay in its implementation.

During the opening of the Sta. Cruz flyover, Bonoan was joined by Lobregat representing Mayor-elect and First District Representative Khymer Adan Olaso; Mayor John Dalipe; DPWH-Zamboanga Peninsula officials led by Regional Director Dia Cayamombao, and the contractor. (SunStar Zamboanga)
