Floods displace 1,028 families in Zamboanga City

A TOTAL of 1,028 families with 3,513 individuals were evacuated to safer grounds in at least 12 villages across Zamboanga City Saturday, June 7, 2025, due to flashflood spawned by southwest monsoon and low-pressure area.

The houses of the affected families were submerged in water brought about by incessant rains that started in the evening of Friday, June 6.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) said it immediately assigned social workers to conduct profiling and assessment of affected families in evacuation centers and subsequently released relief assistance.

Based on the CSWDO record, the villages affected and the number of families displaced are as follows: Ayala, 93 families with 222 individuals; Cawit, 65 families, 254 individuals; Pasonanca, 31 families, 129 individuals; Cabatangan, 37 families - 139 individuals; Recodo, 50 families - 168 individuals; Guiwan, 79 families - 265 individuals; Putik, six families, 16 individuals; Tugbungan, 150 families - 501 individuals; San Jose Gusu, 75 families with 220 individuals; Talisayan, 75 families with 160 individuals; Tumaga, 350 families - 1,570 individuals; and, Boalan, 17 families with 64 individuals.

The CSWDO said most if not all of the affected families have returned to their respective homes Sunday, June 8.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Zamboanga Peninsula, in coordination with the CSWDO, has distributed Family Food Packs to displaced families affected by flooding.

City Health Office personnel have also distributed doxycycline and other medicines to prevent water or rain-related diseases such as leptospirosis among others. (SunStar Zamboanga)
