AN ELECTED government official was killed by a lone gunman early Saturday in Zamboanga City, the police reported.

Senior Inspector Shellamie Chang, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, identified the fatality as Michael Magallanes, the number three village councilor (kagawad) of Sta. Catalina.

Chang said Magallanes was repeatedly shot by a lone gunman at 7:19 a.m. Saturday at Betty 2 drive in the village of Sta. Catalina, this city.

Chang said initial investigation showed that Magallanes was driving motorcycle on his way to a feeding program in Lustre Street, Sta. Catalina when shot by the gunman.

The village official was rushed to the hospital but expired several minutes later while under medical treatment.

The police gathered that the gunmen fled on foot towards the direction of Barangay Tetuan after the incident.

The slain official is active in community service and is the president of the Rotary Club of Zamboanga-west at the time of his death.

The victim has served as the treasurer of the village of Sta. Catalina before he was elected as kagawad in the May 14, 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

This year's incident was the second on the life of Magallanes.

Early last year, he was shot and wounded also in Sta. Catalina village.

Chang said all possible motives are being look into as the local police are conducting an in-depth probe over the incident.
