Junior Army officer injured in accidental firing

A JUNIOR officer of the Philippine Army survived although wounded in an accidental firing incident in a military camp in Zamboanga City, the police said Monday, July 21, 2025.

The local police identified the victim as Second Lieutenant Marcus Levi Pagcaliwangan, 28, a resident of the Edwin Andrews Air Base (EAAB) in Sta. Maria village, Zamboanga City.

The police said the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, July 20, at the 2nd floor Room L, SPTQ barracks, EAAB.

The police said according to Baby Cherry Lopez, fianc of Pagcaliwangan, that the victim accidentally squeezed the trigger while cleaning his issued firearm, Glock 17 9-millimeter pistol.

The military officer sustained a gunshot wound on his head and was rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

The victim is on stable condition though scheduled to undergo surgery, the police said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
