LAMITAN City, Basilan province, is now officially a Third Class Component City, Mayor Roderick Furigay announced.
This reclassification reflects the city's improved local income and economic performance.
"More than that, it means greater capacity to serve, it means more funds for infrastructure, social programs, education and disaster preparedness," Furigay said during his State of the City Report on Thursday, July 3. "It means more opportunities for our youth, our farmers, our fisherfolk, and our entrepreneurs."
Furigay also announced that Lamitan City received its seventh Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) Award. He called it "a true reflection of our commitment to excellence, accountability, and inclusive service." This year, the city government will continue to meet SGLG standards to make government effective in homes, livelihoods, and the community, rather than just for awards.
The mayor stated that these recognitions show a government that listens, adapts, and delivers, not just one that collects plaques or certificates. He attributed these achievements to every city employee, barangay official, civil society partner, and citizen who consistently chose to do what is right.
"We are growing not just in numbers, but in strength, capacity, and purpose. This progress is the fruit of our collective efforts, and it is a sign that our city is truly moving forward," Furigay said. "Together, let us look back at what we’ve achieved, and look ahead to the future we are building."
Furigay also thanked the Lamiteños for their overwhelming trust and support in the recent election. He expressed humility and honor to serve them again, promising to work with integrity, compassion, and excellence daily.
"Running unopposed is not just a political result, it is a message of unity, of shared belief, and of confidence in our direction. Salamat sa inyong muli’t-muling pagtitiwala (Thank you for your continued trust)," he added. (SunStar Zamboanga)
