ONE person was killed while a policeman was injured in a gun attack in Zamboanga Sibugay province, the police said Friday, June 8.

Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the fatality as Loremar Dumantay, 38, who died instantaneously.

Wounded was Senior Police Officer 1 Arvin Cabigon, of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office.

Galvez said they were allegedly shot one after the other by an unidentified gunman around 7:30 a.m. Friday at Purok Imelda in Ipil Heights village, Ipil.

The police officer said investigation showed that the suspect flagged down and repeatedly shot Dumantay, who had just fetched his two children to the Ipil Heights Elementary School.

Galvez said that Cabigon, who coincidentally passed by the place on his way to report for duty, responded and pursued but was shot by the suspect.

She said Cabigon, although wounded, managed to return fire but it was not clear whether the suspect was hit.

Galvez said the suspect boarded a tricycle that sped off towards the highway of Ipil Heights.

Investigation continues in a bid to identify and arrest the suspect, she added. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
