600 runners join 2nd ‘Basura Run’

THE participants of the recently-held 2nd “Basura Run” have collected loads of garbage, an official announced.

Rodrigo Pagotaisidro, public service officer IV, said the “Basura Run,” which was held on Sunday, October 21, was participated by 600 runners.

The runners consisted of personnel from the local and national government agencies, including uniformed personnel, non-government organizations and the different villages.

Pagotaisidro said the 2nd Basura Run kicked-off at 6 a.m. from the covered court of Guiwan village to the Tugbungan Elementary School passing through the Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat Highway then towards Tetuan central School, straight to Avalokitesvara School then turn left to Yubengco Tetuan straight to Tugbungan--all in all covering 5 kilometer of slow run and walk.

The participants filled up their empty sacks with plastic wastes while they run and upon reaching the Tugbungan Elementary School, the trash collected were weighed and sorted and the groups or individuals with the heaviest trash were awarded with prizes.

He said the Basura Run is an advocacy aimed to make people aware of the importance of throwing garbage in proper bins especially plastics, one of the causes of flooding.

The public service officer said it takes place every quarter of the year and is participated by runners and concerned citizens.

The Basura Run adopted the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution, If You Can’t Re-Use it, Refuse it.” (SunStar Philippines)
