Chinese businesswoman nabbed for smuggling cigarettes

THE police have arrested a Chinese businesswoman and seized some P99,500 worth of smuggled cigarettes in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Thursday, May 21.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the arrested Chinese businesswoman as Shihua Li, 43, temporarily residing at Pulmones Street in Santiago village, Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez said Li was arrested around 7 p.m. Wednesday at Purok Bougainvilla in San Jose village, Pagadian City.

She said seized from Li were 199 reams of cigarettes worth P99,500 and a white van.

Li failed to present documents and was arrested for violation of Section 76 of Republic Act 10963 otherwise known as the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion or TRAIN Law in relation to section 145 of R.A. 8424.

The police officer said that Li was also apprised of her basic rights under Miranda doctrine through an interpreter.

Meanwhile, she said the Pagadian City police have coordinated Bureau of International Revenue and Bureau of Customs for filing of appropriate charges against Li. (SunStar Zamboanga)
