CLOSE to 400 houses mostly made of light materials were razed by fire that hit on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 in a densely populated area in Jolo, the capital town of Sulu, officials said.

Jolo Mayor Kerkhar Tan said the fire broke out shortly before 3 p.m. in one of the houses in the densely populated village of Bus-bus.

Tan said the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has yet to determine the origin as efforts continue to contain the fire, which has spread towards the village of Walled City.

The mayor said the BFP has yet to assess the properties that were damaged as well as whether there was casualties in the conflagration.

Tan said they mobilized the resources of the municipal government to provide assistance to the thousands of families displaced by the fire incident.

Sonny Abing, Sulu provincial government information officer, said the firetrucks could barely approach the fire scene due to narrow roads.

“The conflagration has already razed hundreds of houses because it is a densely population area,” Abing said. (SunStar Communities)
