AN IMPROVISED explosive device exploded early Thursday, October 24, in front of the home of a town mayor in Zamboanga City, officials said.
Captain Edwin Duco, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) information officer, said no one was either killed or wounded in the explosion that happened shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday in front of the residence of Asri Taib at Bienvenido Drive in Canelar Village.
Taib is the incumbent mayor of Pangutaran, a fourth class municipality in the province of Sulu.
Duco said the explosion shattered jalousie glass windows and the windshield of a sports utility vehicle owned by the mayor’s family.
Colonel Antonio John Divinagracia, Task Force Zamboanga commander, said the IED that exploded is a low intensity type of explosive, which was intended for the town mayor.
Duco said the incident is likely politically motivated, citing politics is hotly being contested in Pangutaran.
Investigation continues in a bid to establish the identities of the suspects behind the incident, he added. (SunStar Zamboanga)
