LTO sets info drive on child safety law

THE Land Transportation Office is embarking on an information drive to instill awareness on the newly-approve law known as Republic Act 11229.

RA 11229, otherwise known as the Child Safety on Motor Vehicles Act, was drafted by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), has been signed into law in December 2019 by President Rodrigo Duterte.

LTO Regional Director Aminola Abaton said new law prohibits children below 12 years old to sit on the front seat of a vehicle.

Abaton said the law mandates that children below 12 years old to occupy the back seat and should be placed in a restraint system.

Abaton added such practice was the causes why “so many children have been injured or killed in road crashes.”

He said violators of RA 11229 will be fined P1,000 for the first offense, P3,000 for the second offense, and P5,000 for the third or possible suspension from driving.

He said that the new law will be implemented first in the Zamboanga Peninsula. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
