Policeman killed in Sibugay gun attack

AN ON-DUTY policeman was killed in a gun attack in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office (ZSPPO) said the incident happened around 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 5 in Salipyasin village, Kabasalan municipality.

The ZSPPO identified the victim as Police Chief Master Sergeant Ronald Sumamban, 45, who is assigned at Community Police Assistance Center in Canacan village, Kabasalan.

Investigation showed Sumamban was driving a motorcycle on the way to the Kabasalan Municipal Police Station when repeatedly shot by one of two men riding in tandem on another motorcycle that tailed the policeman.

Sumamban was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead by the attending physician.

The suspects took the .9-millimeter service firearm of Sumamban and sped towards the town of Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Investigation continues to identify the suspects behind the incident. (SunStar Zamboanga)
