Zamboanga City pushes alternate routes for trikes

MAYOR Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar convened anew the Tricycle Task Force Tuesday, March 3, as she pushed for alternate routes that the tricycles can use in lieu of the national highway from which they are banned pursuant of a memorandum by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Salazar specifically cited a provision of DILG Memorandum 2020-036 dated February 17, 2020, stating that “portions of the national highway may be allowed to be used by tricycles for lack of alternate routes.”

Salazar said this is to take into consideration the plight of the tricycle drivers as their livelihood is directly affected by the DILG directive.

“We ensure compliance to the DILG memo, we abide by the law, but in the implementation of such, we meet half-way, and give opportunities for our drivers,” the mayor stressed.

“If there is a need for a legislation or ordinance on alternative routes, then we will certify it as urgent,” she added.

She wanted the route plan finalized and submitted to DILG before March 18, the deadline of submission of the tricycle route plan. (SunStar Zamboanga)
