THE Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 (MBLT-1) has designated a female officer to lead its 1st Marine Company (1MC) based in an east coast village in Zamboanga City, the military said Monday, February 10, 2025.

Installed as the new 1MC commander is Fist Lieutenant Armela Mae Ellar-Gil, who replaced Captain Mark Baldazan.

Lieutenant Colonel Nepthalie Papa, MBLT-1 commander, spearheaded the turnover ceremony on Saturday, February 8, at the 1MC at Tala Diversion Road in Lumbangan village, Zamboanga City.

Baldazan expressed his gratitude to the personnel of the 1MC for the cooperation and camaraderie shared during his leadership and encouraged them to extend the same to the incoming officer-in-charge.

During his stint as acting 1MC commander, Baldazan led his company with highest commitment and devotion to service.

As a testament of his competence, the 1MC under the leadership of Baldazan won the prestigious MBLT-1 Best Rifle Company in 2024.

In her assumption message, Gil expressed her determination to break the misconception surrounding female officers in leading a marine rifle company.

Gil also extended her gratitude to Papa for entrusting her with the opportunity to further develop her leadership skills in the tactical level.

Meanwhile, Papa said the designation of Gil is a testament of the capabilities and strength of women, solidifying that leadership is not defined by gender but by competence, dedication, and unwavering commitment to service.

Papa also highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive environment where every officer, regardless of gender, can demonstrate their potential to lead with courage and integrity.

The MBLT-1 said the turnover ceremony symbolizes the transfer of responsibilities and authority to lead the unit from Baldazan to Gil.

The turnover ceremony was witnessed by the stakeholders of the 1MC. (SunStar Zamboanga)
