THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has placed a rescued injured Osprey under the care of its rescue center in Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur.

The DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said Tuesday, April 29, 2025, that the injured Osprey was rescued last week near the Gawil River in Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur.

"The bird, unable to fly due to a leg injury, was first discovered by a local resident who immediately reported the incident to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (Menro)," the DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said in a statement.

Baida Ramos, head of Kumalarang Menro, coordinated with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) of Guipos, who sent a wildlife team confirming the species as an Osprey.

The DENR said Osprey is a raptor typically found near coastal areas, rivers, and lakes.

"The bird shows visible signs of distress and was found to have leg injuries that hindered its ability to move or escape," the DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula said.

The Osprey was immediately transported to the DENR rescue center in Baclay, Tukuran, and is now receiving medical treatment and "ongoing observation to assess the full extent of its injuries."

Personnel of the DENR rescue center continue to monitor the bird's recovery with the goal of rehabilitating and eventually releasing it back into its natural habitat. (SunStar Zamboanga)
